Meet Grammy

Grammy's Town started with a promise from a grandma to her granddaughter, and grew into Alexandria's first indoor imaginative play space.

A promise that grew into a town

Chris Svee ran a daycare in Alexandria for 29 years. Her favorite part was always dramatic play: the pretend kitchens, costumes and make-believe stores, which she rotated to keep things fresh for the kids. She also loves a good birthday party.

When her granddaughter came along and started calling her "Grammy," Chris made her a promise. When she finished with daycare, she'd build "Grammy's Town" in her basement. As she researched indoor play cafés and talked it over with family, the idea outgrew the basement. With encouragement from her husband, Steve, she wrote a business plan, and Grammy's Town opened on Highway 29 North in June 2025.

Built by family

Every storefront in town was built by Uncle Bobby, Steve's uncle, who cut, built and assembled the whole place. Chris drew the lines, and Bobby cut them. That's why the construction site is called Build with Uncle Bobby. Chris's daughter Bri and son Hunter, along with their partners, pitched in on decorating and finishing touches.

Chris keeps watching how kids play and keeps changing the town to match: moving the reading corner somewhere quieter, adding a police station, and rotating a seasonal space.

What Grammy's Town is for

Kids playing with kids

Pretend play builds imagination, confidence and friendships. Here, kids get a whole town to do it in.

Grown-ups meeting grown-ups

Benches, coffee and other parents who get it. Make a friend while the kids run the diner.

A break for parents

A safe, clean place to let the kids play on a long Minnesota winter day, or any day.
